Travel Tips to Stay Safe in Rocky Point, Mexico

Hola Amigo,

Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco), Mexico, is a popular beach destination.  It is about a 3 hour drive from the border of Arizona and the beaches are nice and you have many options between hotels, condos, rental homes and camp grounds.  Like any busy travel destination, you need to take precautions to minimize a chance of bigger problems and risks.

U.S. citizens visiting Puerto Peñasco are urged to use the Lukeville, Arizona border crossing, to limit driving through Mexico, and to limit travel to main roads during daylight hours. For additional information, please refer to “A Safe Trip Abroad” at the following website: http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/safety/safety_1747.html Please review the Department of State’s Travel Warning concerning travel within Mexico and the state of Sonora, available at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_5665.html.

For any emergencies involving American citizens in the Nogales consular district, please call or visit the American Citizens Services (ACS) Unit at the U.S. Consulate General on Calle San Jose S/N, Fraccionamiento, Los Alamos, Nogales, Sonora. Telephone 011.

Remember to never leave your valuables in open areas and if possible, use the hotel or property safe to secure anything you don’t want stolen.   Don’t travel alone and be aware of the part of town your in and the time of day.  It’s not wise to be traveling in an unfamiliar part of town late at night.  Your personal security depends mostly on the safe guards you take.

In addition, the US State Department warns you to check your insurance policy and make sure you are covered when outside the US.  It also states MEDICARE does not cover you abroad.  Be sure your policy covers emergency medical evacuation, travel medical expenses in Mexico, does not require you to translate medical documents or convert currencies before you can submit a claim and provides multilingual service from outside the US.

Have fun visiting Rocky Point.
