We provide travel medical insurance to thousands of summer travelers traveling outside the US.  When asked what is the most common common insurance claim, it is customer’s who get a form of stomach or digestive illness on their trip.  The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates nearly 50% of all international travelers will get ill from Travelers’ Diarrhea.  A few tips to staying healthy and preventing you from getting sick are:

1. Before you depart, research if your destination country has a sanitary water supply.   In countries and regions that do not filter their water, be careful what you eat and drink which includes restaurants that cook with unfiltered water, water not served from bottle (make sure it’s sealed and opened in front of you), unpasteurized dairy and ice.

2. When brushing your teeth, use a water source that is filtered

3. Avoid or be very cautious from eating from street vendors

4. Avoid raw fruits and vegetables unless you can peel them e.g. oranges, bananas, coconuts, mangos, etc…

Travelers’ Diarrhea is not life threatening but it is very unpleasant.  For more travel tips visit www.insurancefortrips.com.  Safe Travels!
