Most travelers expect improved baggage handling and less luggage delays because they are paying additional fees, but it does not necessarily mean the airlines are invesing in personnel, equipment or new technology to ensure your luggage is being transported without any delays. The majority of airlines do not refund the luggage fees if your bags are delayed less than 24 hours.
However, Alaska Airines and it’s sister airline Horizon is one of the few airlines to directly tie extra fees to bag delivery. Alaska is offering passengers a $25 discount on a future trip or 2,500 frequent-flier bonus miles if their checked bags don’t appear on the carousel within 25 minutes from the time their plane arrives at the gate. The guarantee is good for travel through July 31.
It is good to see an airline using the additional fees as not only an additional revenue source, but an opportunity to improve customer service. I hope other airlines follow Alaska Airlines lead and spend some of money they collect on baggage fees to reduce delayed and lost luggage.
The past two trips I took, my checked luggage was delayed and I all I received from the airline was an apology.
