On a recent trip to Africa, my luggage was late and arrived a day later after I arrived at my destination and was delayed over a day when I returned home. Unfortunately paying a baggage fee does not insure your bags will not be lost or delayed but in hindsight there are a few things that I could have done to help prevent my bags being delayed.
1. Allow yourself plenty of time between layovers. I would recommend at least 1.5 hours between international connecting flights and maybe an hour for domestic flights. You have to allow enought time for an airline to transfer your luggage to the new plan, especially if you’re changing airlines.
2. Keep your bags within the weight and size limits. Large pieces of luggage have a greater chance of falling off conveyor belts. Small bags should be carried on.
3. Luggage straps are recommended but make sure they are not loose or can snag or hook onto a belt which can cause damage.
4. Check-in at least 1.5 to 2 hours early. With the additional security measures, your bags will most likely be in line to be x-rayed and scanned. Getting to the airport in plenty of time ensures your bags aren’t left in behind waiting to be scanned.
5. Purchase travel insurance which covers baggage delay. I would have up to $500 to purchase clothes and necessities since both of my trips resulted in my bags being delayed over 24 hours. You can get a free travel insurance quote here.
